MARTIAL ARTS BACKGROUND Well, funnily enough I was always a rough and ready type of individual, had a pretty quick temper, ready to fight at the drop of a hat for any insult, real or imagined.
Turns out fighting is fighting is fighting. The only real difference is trained vs untrained. However, my path along the fighting arts started with capoeira (which I was terrible at), and I quickly found that my talents lay more along the lines of the combative arts rather than traditional martial arts.
So I started learning about a truly horrible system, the Piper Knife System. Let's just say that that took me to some pretty interesting places, doing some interesting things, with some interesting people. I spent a very long time understanding that actually, anything that works is pretty much the best thing to use at crunch time.
However, yearning to know more, I started getting involved in learning different martial arts. I have therefore spent a lot of time cross training in a lot of different arts with some really fantastic people. ie Systema, Kyusho aikijitsu, Aikido, Hapkido, Brazilian Jiujitsu(BJJ), Doce Pares Escrima, Krav Maga and quite a few others. I've found that I especially gravitate towards the more hybrid and I suppose non-traditional arts. As my base system is literally the Piper Knife System, I use that to pressure test whatever I'm learning, to see if the elements I'm learning are useful or if they're just for show.
I subscribe to a thought process that I keep going through all my training. "The system must become a part of who you are, you must not become part of the system". No one martial art is superior to all others really, there is much to learn from all martial arts and their practitioners across the world!
